Five Elements - a celebration of perpetual regeneration

Five Elements, also known as the Five Movements or Five Phases are believed to influence and determine all natural phenomena. Constantly moving and interacting with each other, these elements co-exist in a perpetual cycle of change and progression.

In collaboration with renowned Hong Kong designer Freeman Lau, the new collection finds inspiration in none other than the traditional Chinese philosophy of the Five Elements.

Royal Selangor captures the significance of the Five Elements, creating a collection that comprises functional, decorative items as well as wearables. They include the indispensable tea set, tea caddies, mug, a pair of plaques and five pendants.

Inspired by the pliant bamboo, a symbol of resilience and rapid growth, the elegant pewter designs celebrate the Five Elements in balance and harmony, reflecting perpetual prosperity and auspiciousness.

With his graphic design background, Freeman comes up with five differently-shaped whirls to symbolize the Five Elements. Decorating the pewter surface of all the items like attractive monograms, these elements are the main feature in the five pendant designs. Promoting the concept of perpetual regeneration, each pendant highlights an element together with another supporting element subtly featured in the design. Simple and chic, each pendant accompanied with a leather thong can be worn in a variety of ways, limited only by the imagination.

Conveying auspicious messages are a pair of plaques sculpted with meaningful Chinese phrases 'Continuous prosperity' and 'A perpetual cycle from generation to generation'. The Chinese characters are sculpted in relief and coated in black, standing out against a golden textured surface.

Other materials like wood, bone china and resin, are used in combination with pewter in the collection. Contrasting yet complementary in texture, colour and finishing, the harmonious use of different materials makes each piece aesthetically pleasing and extremely functional.
